Chapter 5
GEMMA LOOKED AT HERSELF in the small mirror above the dry sink. Though it might have served for shaving, it was impossible to judge her appearance and she wanted to look her best for this evening.
Callum had peeked in the office during lunch and told her to be ready at four. He was taking her out. Though Bilbarra was a two-hour drive, she imagined a night away from the station, away from his responsibilities and her uncertainty, might be just the thing for them both. They’d have dinner or maybe a few drinks at a pub in town.
She smoothed her hands over her dress, the prettiest choice from the small selection she’d brought along. After her shower, she’d used the last of her scented lotion to make her skin soft to the touch, suspecting he would be doing a lot of touching later. Her makeup and hair had taken an hour. And she’d even painted her toes and fingernails an enticing shade of red.
A shiver skittered though her as she thought about what might happen between them. They’d come so close over the past few days, the desire between them growing with each intimate encounter. Gemma had decided he was leaving the last move to her, allowing her to decide when they’d let passion overwhelm practicality.
“Tonight,” Gemma murmured as she stared at herself. But what if he wasn’t ready? He’d have to anticipate this, to have protection. He would sense this was coming, wouldn’t he? If only there was a way to know for sure.
She cursed softly. Cal wasn’t an idiot. And if he forgot the condoms, then he’d have to suffer the consequences. Gemma smiled. Besides, there were other things they could do that didn’t involve full-on, toe-curling, mind-blowing sex.
A knock sounded on the door and she took a deep breath and hurried across the room to answer it. Cal stood on the other side, his hair damp from a shower. But he was still dressed in work clothes.
“Aren’t you ready?” He frowned. “You’re not planning to wear that, are you?”
Gemma glanced down at the dress. “Not nice enough? Where are we going?”
He sighed, then took her hand. “It will do. Come on, we have to leave now if we’re going to get there in time.”
His ute was parked in front of the bunkhouse, the engine running. Cal helped her inside and then jogged around to the driver’s side. He hopped in, then reached over her and grabbed the seat belt. “You’re going to need this,” he said.
He threw the truck into gear, then drove out of the yard, in the opposite direction of the road. Before long, the truck was on rough terrain and Gemma was forced to hold tight to the grip above the window. They bounced over uneven ground, at times so bad that she felt as if she were on a carnival ride.
“Is this a short cut?” she asked. “Isn’t Bilbarra the other direction?”
“Who said we were going to Bilbarra?” He glanced over at her.
